This technique is taught as part of the lessons. Different teachers use different approaches. A traditional approach will have the child learning to read music almost right away. Whereas, if the child is being taught by a Suzuki approach, reading music is taught much later on. With a Suzuki approach, the child learns to hear first and they learn to play what they hear, rather than what they see. Being able to read music automatically happens later when a Suzuki student has been learning for several years.
